Sooooon boring。 Lovely colors and art, and I want to read an entire comic about Clownhunter, though。

SOMEbody saw The Dark Knight Rises before he wrote this。

So Joker War starts off decent, gets a little gloomy in the middle, and made me feel stupid for having read it by the end。 There was a while there when I was thinking "this is sort of charming and I might even shell out the cash for that big honkin omnibus with all the side-stories and everything" but then the ending hit and I remembered that superhero comics are written for idiots。 The advertising advertises that this is the real last Joker Batman story for real real, and even though this obvio So Joker War starts off decent, gets a little gloomy in the middle, and made me feel stupid for having read it by the end。 There was a while there when I was thinking "this is sort of charming and I might even shell out the cash for that big honkin omnibus with all the side-stories and everything" but then the ending hit and I remembered that superhero comics are written for idiots。 The advertising advertises that this is the real last Joker Batman story for real real, and even though this obviously isn't true it's also what is presented on the first page, so you gotta think that at least something is going to happen that will feel unique or special or whatever。But what is true is that this advertising is a lie and the book can't even keep up the lie for the whole book。 By the end it's just, like, a lie or whatever and nothing really happens。 Joker fights the Batman。 The end。 。。。more

Collects Batman issues #95-100I happened to read Volume 1, "Their Dark Designs," and this Volume 2 over the course of one weekend, and they are a great combination read。 The story builds really well, and this resolves what Tynion started in Issue #85, and sets things up well for the future。 That status quo for the Batman/Joker relationship has changed, and I like the change。 If I could change one thing, I'd have had more Catwoman and less Harley Quinn。 Punchline continues to be a big force in th Collects Batman issues #95-100I happened to read Volume 1, "Their Dark Designs," and this Volume 2 over the course of one weekend, and they are a great combination read。 The story builds really well, and this resolves what Tynion started in Issue #85, and sets things up well for the future。 That status quo for the Batman/Joker relationship has changed, and I like the change。 If I could change one thing, I'd have had more Catwoman and less Harley Quinn。 Punchline continues to be a big force in the story。 。。。more

The Joker taking over the whole city might have worked a bit better if it weren't on the heels of Bane taking over the whole city, especially with Tynion just not being quite the writer that King is。Oh, this is OK。 There's some excitement, particularly in the first few issues, and Tynion walks back some of the worst character assassination of the nu52 world (regarding Dick and Barbara)。 But it ultimately turns into long, pointless fight scenes。 I don't even see why everyone loves Punchline so mu The Joker taking over the whole city might have worked a bit better if it weren't on the heels of Bane taking over the whole city, especially with Tynion just not being quite the writer that King is。Oh, this is OK。 There's some excitement, particularly in the first few issues, and Tynion walks back some of the worst character assassination of the nu52 world (regarding Dick and Barbara)。 But it ultimately turns into long, pointless fight scenes。 I don't even see why everyone loves Punchline so much。So: it's OK。 。。。more

For volume 2 it wasn’t that bad。 I’m curious what happens next。 What has happened so far was ok but felt a little disjointed。

Exciting dialogue, compelling plot, and dynamic art。 Decent understanding of the Joker/Batman dynamic, and decent pay off。

This series continues to be over the top in its absurdity。 It also continues to be relentlessly entertaining and the art, as ever, is absolutely gorgeous。 Check your disbelief at the door, sit back, and enjoy the beautifully crazy ride。

The best part is were Batman has to accept he is not perfect and when he have to corny moments, were one of them is the bat making a joke and Harley Quinn ignoring it。 Oh yaer the joker had stop making sense in the terrible way。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm enjoying a more action packed Tynion run so far。 Punchline is a copy of Harley Quinn and didn't play a memorable role in the story。 Her confrontation with Harley is one to watch with little words but more action。 Batman loses all his wealth at the end of Joker War and Lucius Fox is the one inherited it。 The aftermath of this war can be felt even beyond issue 100 as Batman has to think of ways to fight crime without his billions and Alfred。 I'm enjoying a more action packed Tynion run so far。 Punchline is a copy of Harley Quinn and didn't play a memorable role in the story。 Her confrontation with Harley is one to watch with little words but more action。 Batman loses all his wealth at the end of Joker War and Lucius Fox is the one inherited it。 The aftermath of this war can be felt even beyond issue 100 as Batman has to think of ways to fight crime without his billions and Alfred。 。。。more

Absolutely tremendous stuff。 Tynion & Jimenez have somehow managed to dig out a fresh angle on Batman & The Joker and dialled it up to epic proportions。 Really well thought out and even using strands from King’s run and getting depth and emotion from it that previous run never managed。 Superb use of Harley Quinn and the wider Gotham cast。 Brilliant。

This was neat。 I’m very glad there was some distance between the hardback release of this and Three Jokers, because they’re quite similar in what they’re trying to do with the Batman + Joker dynamic (they even share two VERY similar set pieces)Tynion continues weaving his story of a Gotham critical of the Wayne fortune, and this run is clearly keen to remove some of the over the top wealth that Batman has been known for over the past two decades in particular。 It’s very refreshing seeing Batman This was neat。 I’m very glad there was some distance between the hardback release of this and Three Jokers, because they’re quite similar in what they’re trying to do with the Batman + Joker dynamic (they even share two VERY similar set pieces)Tynion continues weaving his story of a Gotham critical of the Wayne fortune, and this run is clearly keen to remove some of the over the top wealth that Batman has been known for over the past two decades in particular。 It’s very refreshing seeing Batman on the back-foot and needing/wanting to rely on his numerous allies, to help get him through a crisis。 The Joker is as vicious as ever, and frankly looks fabulous in Jorge Jimenez’s pencils。 Jimenez is the perfect artist to accompany James Tynion IV’s scripts for Batman; lending a great sense of dynamism and larger than life scale to the chaos that erupts onto Gotham’s streets。 I love hopeful Batman。 This volume is better than the first, and helps establish some really neat roots for Tynion’s future on the title。 I dig it。 。。。more

I loved some elements but it definitely had its ups and downs throughout。 I liked the last few issues that let the Batfamily shine with Dick taking back up the Nightwing mantle and Babs Oracle。 I also liked the development of Punchline though I think she wasn't always written evenly, as for Harley, I like how focused she was but she leans into the interpretation that I am not a huge fan of。 The more manic pixie part of her personality, when I prefer a little more grounded Harley。 And her last st I loved some elements but it definitely had its ups and downs throughout。 I liked the last few issues that let the Batfamily shine with Dick taking back up the Nightwing mantle and Babs Oracle。 I also liked the development of Punchline though I think she wasn't always written evenly, as for Harley, I like how focused she was but she leans into the interpretation that I am not a huge fan of。 The more manic pixie part of her personality, when I prefer a little more grounded Harley。 And her last stand just seemed dumb, though I liked how it illustrated Joker but from her point of view I didn't buy it as viable。 I loved seeing the villain lair where they all hang out and make bets on how things are going to turn out。 and the set up for Clownkiller intrigues me so does Punchline's epilogue。 I guess in the end I like Joker less of a city wide villain, the whole hungry city part just doesn't convince me the point, I think he works best as agent of chaos。 Like the the whole 'you need to fail, the city will never be whole' it gets a shrug, who cares。 Though 'do you want it to be Metropolis with less aliens' did make me laugh。 。。。more

This is full of slam-bang action, but at the end of the day, it's just ok。 Maybe I'm just getting a little tired of Batman vs。 Joker or perhaps the whole notion that these Batman stories have to involve dire threats to the entire city, but I'd like to see some more intimate stories where Batman can just be a badass detective fighting weird psychos。 Don't get me wrong, there were some memorable moments in this arc, such as the introduction of Punchline and Clownhunter, and Batman coming (somewhat This is full of slam-bang action, but at the end of the day, it's just ok。 Maybe I'm just getting a little tired of Batman vs。 Joker or perhaps the whole notion that these Batman stories have to involve dire threats to the entire city, but I'd like to see some more intimate stories where Batman can just be a badass detective fighting weird psychos。 Don't get me wrong, there were some memorable moments in this arc, such as the introduction of Punchline and Clownhunter, and Batman coming (somewhat) to grips with the loss of Alfred。 But if you're going to have an epic story like this, it needs to be more like Batman: Hush, playing out over maybe a year or more; these six issues seemed to rush the story too much。 This volume references some tie-ins from Nightwing and Batwoman, for example, so perhaps if these had been included here the story would have felt more complete。 。。。more

One of those stories that has the appearance of “very important” but when you get to the end, you realize it has nothing new to say。 And the whole secret identity thing should feel like a huge deal but it doesn’t at all。 It’s all competently written and blockbustery, but there’s not much behind this pretty face。Also, when’s the last time the Joker was funny? Am I crazy in thinking he should be funny?

The Joker War brings a totally new and never before seen arc to Batman。 It's about the Joker。。。bringing war。。。to Gotham。 Okay jokes aside, and you probably saying "not another Joker story" This was pretty good。 The storyline is simple enough and seen it done million times。 But the fact James REALLY nails some of these character moments。 Sure Joker's idea to take away Bruce's money and make him suffer personally is cool but it's the moments with Dick's return, Batman and Alfred, Harley Quinn bein The Joker War brings a totally new and never before seen arc to Batman。 It's about the Joker。。。bringing war。。。to Gotham。 Okay jokes aside, and you probably saying "not another Joker story" This was pretty good。 The storyline is simple enough and seen it done million times。 But the fact James REALLY nails some of these character moments。 Sure Joker's idea to take away Bruce's money and make him suffer personally is cool but it's the moments with Dick's return, Batman and Alfred, Harley Quinn being a goddamn QUEEN, and so many more smaller moments worked real well。 It also helps that the new characters are well done。 Both Punchline and Clownhunter are awesome additions to the Batman Mythos。 I also really loved the art。 Just so damn good。 The action flows so well and the sexiness of everyone from Batman to Harley Quinn to Punchline is SO good。 I need more of that shit。 The pacing was a bit off and parts felt stilted in terms of storyline。 But when the character moments came up they shined so good。 A 4 out of 5。 。。。more

Tynion tackles A LOT of stuff in this book。 I just don't think he needed to make it a Joker story in order to do it all。Joker War deals with the fallout of Tynion's previous Batman story, Their Dark Designs, where Batman loses all of his wealth and belongings to The Joker, who goes on a huge shopping spree using every penny to kill Batman。 Cool premise。 That's *REALLY* not what this book is about though。The previous writer for Batman, Tom King, unceremoniously killed Batman's surrogate father/bu Tynion tackles A LOT of stuff in this book。 I just don't think he needed to make it a Joker story in order to do it all。Joker War deals with the fallout of Tynion's previous Batman story, Their Dark Designs, where Batman loses all of his wealth and belongings to The Joker, who goes on a huge shopping spree using every penny to kill Batman。 Cool premise。 That's *REALLY* not what this book is about though。The previous writer for Batman, Tom King, unceremoniously killed Batman's surrogate father/butler, Alfred。 And the bulk of this story is Bruce t̶r̶i̶p̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶d̶r̶u̶g̶s̶ processing the trauma of losing his closest confidant, grieving, and moving forward。 Tynion puts Alfred's wit, loyalty, and faith in his surrogate son on display in all its glory and its one hell of a send-off。The other thing going on is the introduction of Joker's new groupie, Punchline。 I didn't click with character (in this story anyway), but the existence of Punchline finally makes good on the promise DC made when they bleached Harley Quinn all those years ago in a tank full of skeletons:Joker is an abuser and a manipulator。 Harley was not his first victim, and she would not be his last。 By pitting Harley against Punchline we get to see just how far Harley has come as a character since she removed herself from The Joker's influence。 I don't think we've ever actually seen that in the main Batman book (at least not front and center like it is here)。 It's a welcome addition, and fun to see her talk back and forth with Batman instead of throwing punches at him。 We also get to see Harley's perspective on what should be done with The Joker once he's caught, as she knows better than anyone that just because Joker is locked up, doesn't mean he can't hurt people。 It's a sobering bit of dialogue that ramps up the tension in the last act and makes me hope Harley stays as part of Batman's extended cast。 When Tynion wrote her with a lot of maturity in this story and I hope its something he continues。So yeah, the story focuses more on everything else except the villain who has top billing。 A bit disappointing。 But I'd be lying if I said that this story wasn't good。 There's a lot of good character work here with Harley and Alfred got the send off he deserved (all while cleaning up the mess Tom King left behind)。 Not a bad read, just know what you're buying。 。。。more

I liked this a lot more than Tynion’s initial arc; it’s a much better executed version of his conception for the series as horror-tinged back-to-basics Batman stories with interesting new characters and gadgets for new readers and old fans alike。 I do wish Tynion had been confident enough in his take on the series to avoid what feels like an overtly defensive monologue from the Joker about how people say they want something new, but really just want the same familiar things over and over except I liked this a lot more than Tynion’s initial arc; it’s a much better executed version of his conception for the series as horror-tinged back-to-basics Batman stories with interesting new characters and gadgets for new readers and old fans alike。 I do wish Tynion had been confident enough in his take on the series to avoid what feels like an overtly defensive monologue from the Joker about how people say they want something new, but really just want the same familiar things over and over except with new layers to them revealed。One big positive change is there’s not so many new faces only making a brief appearance this time, which previously felt more like a marketing gimmick than an artistic choice。 Instead, Clownhunter and Punchline are the only real newish faces and each gets plenty of pages to explore who they are beyond their striking appearances; each one feels like a promising twist on an existing Gotham archetype, too。Joker being the one with unlimited funds and access to cutting edge tech this time is an interesting new angle to his and Batman’s ongoing conflict, and I thought the eventual reveal of Joker’s deeper goal was promising in how it reflected contemporary real-world anxieties about hollowed-out institutions that we depend on。 There’s a more specific reading there about how easily a villainous figure can gain control of institutional bureaucracy and pervert it towards their own evil intent, but I’m not sure if Tynion intends it or has much to say on that subject so far if so。Batman also gets another brief hallucinatory journey into his psyche that’s visually interesting and a decent critique of the mopey control-freak tendencies he’s been written with over the years, plus it offers more emotional resolution to the big loss from the end of Tom King’s recent run on the series。 There’s also one of the most delightfully dad-joke named Bat gadgets ever, and I was glad to see art that’s more consistently to my taste than Tynion’s initial arc had。 The epilogue suggests a promising next few issues too! 。。。more
